…a Critical Need for Announcers!!

As the new Volunteer Coordinator, I want to begin by thanking the many, many parents and friends who have already stepped forward to help make Jazz in the Meadows both the largest jazz festival in the Midwest and one that is envied and imitated for the class and quality of the overall experience for the bands who participate.

Part of each band’s competitive performance is the overall experience in the classrooms and venues throughout the building and key to that experience is the role of the Announcer.  Each competition room has an Announcer who helps keep the bands performing in front of the judges on time and with the utmost class and professionalism.  Working closely with the room’s three judges, the Announcer meets briefly with each band director as they enter and set up the room, confirming their pre-set playlist has not changed.  The Announcer then welcomes the band and its audience to the room and announces the songs they will play.  As each band completes its performance, the Announcer collects the judges sheets and bundles them to be given to a student runner to take to the Scoring Office.  That’s it!

I have volunteered in this role for several years and have really enjoyed hearing the bands, working with the judges and really feeling like a small but vitally important part of the overall Jazz in the Meadows experience.  While the extroverts out there will love this position, introverts will find it easier than it might sound because everything that need to be done is written out including the announcement to be said before each band performs.  You will be surprised how much fun this position winds up being: I certainly was during the first year I did this – I had signed up for the just the morning and then decided to stay and continue announcing for the whole day!

In addition, we will host a training at 7:15 p.m., Friday, February 26 (the night before), for anybody who would like to go over the process, see the materials and get completely comfortable with the role.

Please consider volunteering as an Announcer for Jazz in the Meadows or any of the positions still available for this great event and amazing fund-raiser for the music programs at RMHS!  Sign up here http://vols.pt/L9Hmfn

I look forward to seeing your name on Volunteer Spot in the next few days and to seeing YOU on the 27th at the 31st Jazz in the Meadows!
